Description
  • Klabin communicates with stakeholders on environmental performance and social responsibility on its website (www.kablin.com/br). In line with the principles of the Global Compact, the company conducts its activities on the basis of sustainable development, to preserve the biodiversity and the ecosystem balance in the areas in which it operates. The website addresses Kablin?s environmental performance in four key areas: The Forest Sector, The Industrial Sector, Recycling and Environmental Education.

In the forestry sector, Klabin has been able to plant highly productive new forests every year. In 350 thousand hectares of its land, the company preserves 123 thousand hectares of native forests, intermingled with 185 thousand hectares of reforestation projects. In the industrial sector, Klabin is constantly pursuing technologies that aim at minimizing environmental impacts. The whole Group follows the guidelines and actions established in the Environmental Control Director Plan (Plano Diretor de Controle Ambiental ? PDCA ) designed by environmental preservation specialists. Klabin?s industrial upgrading procedures determine the adoption of clean technologies to produce pulp, paper and other items. The company is continuously investing in equipment to control effluent outflows, atmospheric emissions and solid waste residues. In the area of recycling, Kablin produces 33% of the recycled paper in the Brazilian corrugated box market. This has resulted in a reduction of virgin fibre demand, urban waste and production costs as well as a generation of income sources for pickers and waste paper traders.

Environmental education is described as part of Kablin?s social responsibility. The social responsibility section of the website also describes the company?s sustainable development policy, and its social actions in the areas of health, social assistance and culture.

    -------------

Klabin?s care for the environment has been internationally recognized: it is the first company worldwide to be granted the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification. Klabin promotes environmental education programs, targeted to both employees and members of the communities in which it operates. Its efforts include agreements with the Universidade do Planalto Catarinense (Uniplac) to create an environmental education extension program, and the Caiubi Project in ParanĂ¡. Both efforts aim at preparing teachers to develop regional-focused programs within schools as well as to spread responsible environmental management with respect to all productive processes.
