Description
  • Tetra Pak became a participating Company in the Global Compact in April 2004, which was communicated both internally and externally on Tetra Pak''s website. (http://www.tetrapak.com/content/newsnocat.asp?navid=117). Tetra Pak''s commitment to follow the nine principles was already in line with the way of working by the Tetra Pak Group and follows Tetra Pak''s Vision, Tetra Pak''s Code of Business Conduct, and the Mission statement that refers to Tetra Pak''s belief in "responsible industry leadership, creating profitable growth in harmony with environmental sustainability and good corporate citizenship".

Below references are examples of how Tetra Pak has and will continue to address the nine principles of the Global Compact.

    - Tetra Pak is a member of IBLF (International Business Leaders Forum), a non-for-profit organisation established in 1990 to promote responsible business practices that contribute to sustainable development (www.iblf.org).

    - Tetra Pak sets global environmental goals in areas that are of key importance to the company. These goals are revised on a yearly basis. Current long-term environmental goals include 15% energy efficiency improvement in Tetra Pak''s operations by 2005 (compared to 2002 as a baseline) and 25% recycling of post-consumer beverage cartons by 2008. To achieve its goals, Tetra Pak uses internationally recognised environmental management instruments such as DFE (Design for Environment), LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and Environmental Reporting (http://www.tetrapak.com/content/page.asp?navid=12 ). Tetra Pak has an environmental policy which is the foundation for all its environmental programmes and activities http://www.tetrapak.com/content/page.asp?navid=5&view=1&show=1), and in its Environmental Reports. (http://www.tetrapak.com/environmentalperformance/content/frset_main.asp?navid=146 ).

In 2002, Tetra Pak issued its 2nd Corporate Environmental Performance Update (see the company''s Environmental Reports at http://www.tetrapak.com/index.asp?navid=114) and in April 2003 it has issued a Report called "One Step Ahead - Corporate Environmental Report 2002." These reports focus on the key achievements of the Group?s environmental activities.

    - On its website, Tetra Pak states that "[b]y becoming a participating company to the UN Global Compact, Tetra Pak will be sharing information about best practices and learning from others for future activities. We will also strengthen the base for further cooperation with UN and other organisations in joint development projects based on public-private partnerships."

    - Tetra Pak''s Food for Development Office has developed the Value Chain Model "from Cow to Consumer" as a basis for working in partnership with local Governments, private industry, non-Government Organisations (NGOs), international and national development agencies in the areas of agricultural development, nutrition and feeding programmes. For more details, please refer to the Food for Development Brochures http://www.tetrapak.com/content/frset_main.asp?navid=89&) and the Tetra Pak Food for Development Office website www.tetrapak.com/ffdo.
