  • Our most important communication with stakeholders is through our Annual Report, and through our more extensive "Global Commitment" at our website.

    Locally, our sites have regular communication with different stakeholders. On issues regarding environment, labour practices, and human rights, we communicate directly with NGO?s and with local community.

    Society, including human rights:

    - Hydro pledged a total of USD 2 million towards the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo

    - Hydro invested around NOK 850 million in research and development

    - Hydro has worked actively through international forums in order to promote transparency in all companies e.g. regarding signature bonuses

    - Hydro is involved in Transparency International?s anti-corruption work.

    - Revision of a number of important internal guidelines:
    o Global working conditions
    o Ethical guidelines
    o Policy on Corporate Social Responsibility

    - At a group level, the Norwegian market research organisation MMI has performed a perception study in 2001/2002/2003, including Norwegian population, authorities, politicians, media, suppliers, professionals and investors.

    - In 2003, Hydro spent approx. NOK 75 million philanthropic contributions/voluntary social investments.

    People, including labour practices:

    - A pilot project on social reporting was carried out in 2002 and 2003, encompassing five countries and 10% of our employees.

    - In 2004, Hydro will lay down a plan for implementing appraisal dialogues throughout the whole organisation.

    - Hydro has renewed its cooperation-agreement with Amnesty International Norway, and Hydro paid NOK 1 million to Amnesty in 2003.

    - Major restructuring in different business areas affect local communities. Hydro is involved in efforts to set up other activities in the local communities affected.

    - Work on developing an overall parameter for measuring technical safety continued in 2003. It will be introduced in certain factories in 2004.

    - A Hydro-internal project has recommended directing greater attention to occupational illness and developing better indicators for identifying risks in the working environment. This will be followed up in 2004.

    - A survey was carried through in 2002 and 2003 to follow up the implementation of Hydro?s People Policy.

    - In December 2003, an information programme focusing on Hydro?s values and vision has been introduced to all employees.

    - Hydro performs Social Impact Assessments (SIA) for all major projects, or when relevant for other reasons.

    Environment:

    - A policy on Climate Change was developed in 2003.

    - A policy on Biodiversity is under development (to be finalised in 2004).

    - Hydro is involved in wind and wave power projects and in trials involving hydrogen as an energy carrier.

    - We continue to develop our production methods and products to ensure that emissions and discharges throughout the life-cycle are as low as possible.

    - Regarding to greenhouse gas emissions, we are involved in international efforts to develop global frameworks based on flexible mechanisms, such as trading with emissions quotas. We are committed to be in the forefront of development of frameworks, reducing our own emissions and developing sustainable energy and materials systems.

    - We develop new technology, both in-house and in collaboration with other oil and gas companies, for the production of electricity and hydrogen from natural gas.

    - We take the expected CO2-charge into consideration in all major investments, and apply foresight in our choices of solutions with lower emissions of greenhouse gases.

    - Hydro was active in the development of the GHG-Protocol (by WBCSD/WRI), and participated in the project management team and as core advisors.

    - Reduced emissions of fluorocarbons are planned from 2006, when SF6 will be replaced as blanket gas in magnesium casting.

    - Hydro has introduced purification technology and other measures over the years that have resulted in major reductions in emissions and discharges.

    - Planned measures, some of which have been implemented, will reduce damage to the marine environment from our oil and gas installations by 80% in 2005, compared to 2002.

    - Hydro will close down Søderberg-processes within 2006 due to environmental causes.

    - Hydro is involved in several projects aiming at safeguarding biodiversity.

    - Hydro Aluminium introduced an environmental index in 2003 to be used for target setting at all levels within the business area.

    - Hydro has developed a new smelter technology that is the industry?s benchmark regarding energy use and emissions.

    - Hydro performs Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for all major projects, or when relevant for other reasons.

    - Generally, the awareness level on human rights, labour practices, and environment has increased on all levels in the organisation.

    - Several projects have been initiated to assess these topics more systematically, and the actions mentioned in the list above are outcomes of our long term work with these issues.

    - We are integrating TI?s Business Principles for Countering Bribery in our business practices.

    - In 2003, 1800 employees followed at least one e-learning course.

    - The total number of employees attending Hydro?s leadership development process has increased from 2600 in 2002 to nearly 5000 in 2003.

    - Training was given to around 500 people in 2003, in order to be prepared for political, financial and social factors when stationed in new countries.

    - Total recordable injuries (TRI) were reduced from 10.3 in 2003 to 7.0 in 2003.

    - Safety work at former VAW-sites has achieved major improvements in 2002 and 2003.

    - Hydro achieved a considerable improvement in the reporting of near-misses in 2002. This positive trend continued in 2003.

    - Hydro?s emissions of greenhouse gases (based on ownership) has been reduced by 13% in relation to 1990.
