Human Rights
  • Assessment, policy and goals
  • Description of the relevance of human rights for the company (i.e. human rights risk-assessment). Description of policies, public commitments and company goals on Human Rights.

  • Leijona Catering supports the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We maintain a culture of openness and high ethics.

Leijona Catering has operations only in Finland. We treat our employees and hired temporary labor fairly and equally and respecting the Finnish labor law. We promote well-being and equality. Further development of security and work safety is one of our continuous common goals.

In the food services industry the human rights risks can typically be identified in the primary production or production of food ingredients. Roughly 20 percent of our purchases are of other-than-domestic origin. The share of purchases, in terms of volume, from those countries of origin that appear on the risk country listing of amfori was about 0,5% in the first year half of 2021. The final figure for the year 2021 will be available in January, 2021.

  • Implementation
  • Description of concrete actions to implement Human Rights policies, address Human Rights risks and respond to Human Rights violations.

  • We are using an independent 3rd party operated whistle-blowing channel where anyone can declare a suspicion of wrongdoing or other possible incidents where our ethical guidelines and values have been violated.

In 2022, our plan is to develop and start implementing a due diligence process to strengthen our analysis of human rights related risk levels within our purchases, and the related monitoring activities in collaboration with our suppliers.

  • Measurement of outcomes
  • Description of how the company monitors and evaluates performance.

  • Systematic monitoring and evaluating our performance in minimizing human rights related risks is part of our development plan for year 2022.

Labour
  • Assessment, policy and goals
  • Description of the relevance of labour rights for the company (i.e. labour rights-related risks and opportunities). Description of written policies, public commitments and company goals on labour rights.

  • Leijona Catering has operations only in Finland. In the recent years there have been reported cases of modern slavery in the restaurant industry also in Finland. We at Leijona Catering strictly adhere to the Finnish labour law in all our operations. We treat our employees and hired temporary labor fairly and equally. We promote well-being and equality. Further developing security and work safety is one of our continuous common goals.

Due to the national security-critical clients and their locations where we provide our services we can only employ Finnish nationals.

  • Implementation
  • Description of concrete actions taken by the company to implement labour policies, address labour risks and respond to labour violations.

  • We are using a whistle-blowing channel, operated by an independent 3rd party, where anyone can declare a suspicion of wrongdoing or other possible incidents where our ethical guidelines and values have been violated.

  • Measurement of outcomes
  • Description of how the company monitors and evaluates performance.

  • As a part of the whistle-blowing process the number of reported incidents, type, average time of resolution, and corrective actions taken, are reported annually after the year closing.

Environment
  • Assessment, policy and goals
  • Description of the relevance of environmental protection for the company (i.e. environmental risks and opportunities). Description of policies, public commitments and company goals on environmental protection.

  • Leijona Catering buys ingredients from our wholesale partner and prepares and serves meals as a tenant collaborator in our clients' premises. The environmental risks resulting from these operations are low.

Roughly 80 % of our food ingredients are grown and produced in Finland. Via industry collaboration, working with the upstream domestic food chain we can achieve positive large-scale impacts by developing know-how, readiness and a stronger market for e.g. low-carbon food products, organic and carbon-farmed produce.

Our goal is to reduce the average carbon footprint of a meal served by 25% and to reduce bio waste by 13% by year 2025.

  • Implementation
  • Description of concrete actions to implement environmental policies, address environmental risks and respond to environmental incidents.

  • We have an ISO14001 certified environmental management system.

We are participating in various development projects within the food industry e.g. to reduce carbon footprint of meals, to introduce different legumes and plant-based protein sources to substitute red meat consumption, to harmonize environmental/climate footprint LCA calculations, and to protect our sea, lakes and waterways from effluents and promote carbon farming.

Leijona Catering has long had a requirement of at least one environmentally trained team member per restaurant. In 2022 a new environmental learning program will be launched and this basic requirement will simultaneously be renewed. Locally, Restaurant Managers have also environmental management responsibility for the daily operations. In 2021, we invested in continuous improvement by hiring an experienced Sustainability Manager to steer and develop our corporate responsibility and environmental agenda.

  • Measurement of outcomes
  • Description of how the company monitors and evaluates environmental performance.

  • Leijona Catering reports our environmental footprint in terms of climate emissions, works to reduce the emissions, and monitors progress as both absolute and relative carbon emissions. The key performance indicator is the average CO2e per meal served which we report on an annual basis. Our other key impact indicator is food waste per meal served which we follow up via monthly reporting.

The annual results from our environmental reporting, including the key performance indicators, will be available in early 2022 and disclosed as a part of our sustainability reporting.

Our ISO14001 certified environmental management system is audited on an annual basis. The EMS is submitted for a management review twice a year.

Anti-Corruption
  • Assessment, policy and goals
  • Description of the relevance of anti-corruption for the company (i.e. anti-corruption risk-assessment). Description of policies, public commitments and company goals on anti-corruption.

  • Finland is among the top three of least corrupted countries in the world and Leijona Catering has operations only in Finland. Judging by these two facts the risk of corruption and bribery is very low in our operations. However, our specific remit of serving national security-critical clients may create different, very specific risks atypical for the industry in general.

We do not accept any inappropriate payments, benefits, or gifts, via which the target would be to influence the decision-making of the recipient or lead in misuse of position. We have a zero-tolerance policy for corruption, bribery, and money laundering.

  • Implementation
  • Description of concrete actions to implement anti-corruption policies, address anti-corruption risks and respond to incidents.

  • Our employees all undergo rigorous background and security checks before their employment starts.

The financial linkages of the Board of Directors, the Executive Management and their family members, Sourcing Manager and Sourcing Specialist are reported annually.

We are using a whistleblowing channel operated by an independent 3rd party, where anyone can declare a suspicion of wrongdoing or other possible incidents where our ethical guidelines and values have been violated.

  • Measurement of outcomes
  • Description of how the company monitors and evaluates anti-corruption performance.

  • As a part of the whistle-blowing process the number of reported incidents, type, average time of resolution, and corrective actions taken, are reported annually after the year closing.
