How to Set Science-Based Targets Aligning with 1.5°C Pathways

In light of the latest climate science and in the lead up to the Summit, the UN Global Compact calls on all companies to set their science-based targets with a new level of ambition — one that aligns with 1.5°C pathways. Starting with setting the context of the Climate Summit, in this open Academy session experts from the Science Based Targets initiative and corporate leaders present new updated guidance to help companies raise ambition in practice, and also on how scope 3 targets are affected by the new climate science

The Ambition Loop

No company or Government can rise to the climate challenge on their own. Public corporate commitments on climate action help demonstrate the economic case for ambitious climate policy, and Governments can build on the growing business leadership to enact stronger, more ambitious policies. These kind of 'ambition loops' - positive feedback loops in which private sector leadership and Government policies reinforce each other - are emerging around the world. During this session, you will learn how your company can apply the concept of an 'ambition loop' and fast-track zero-carbon economic growth.

Setting a Price on Carbon

What does it mean to put a price on carbon? To date, 1,300 companies have internalized carbon pricing into their business operations, and investors are increasingly paying attention to carbon pricing as a means to mitigate climate risks and deliver on the Paris Agreement.

In the run-up to COP 24 in Katowice, Poland this November, experts, business representatives and investors will demonstrate why carbon pricing makes good business sense and show you how your company can use an internal price on carbon as a tool to mitigate climate-related financial risks, discover new business opportunities and prepare for the transition to a low-carbon economy.
