Climate Ambition

Accelerate ambitious climate action to deliver on the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

We face a climate emergency with irreversible impacts for people and the natural systems that sustain us. At the same time, entering 2021 we continue to be confronted with the COVID-19 pandemic that is devastating people and their livelihoods, disrupting supply chains, profoundly deepening inequalities and undoing progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the face of these interconnected crises, UN Secretary-General António Guterres is calling on all stakeholders to “build a coalition for carbon neutrality” for a more sustainable and equitable world.

Five years into the adoption of the Paris Agreement, the private sector has a crucial role to play. More and more companies are prioritizing corporate climate action and raising ambition in line with climate science. In the lead up to COP26 in November 2021, business must demonstrate that the world is on a credible path to net-zero emissions. To reach the goals of the Paris Agreement and halve global emissions by 2030, we will need corporate leaders and Government to work together and stakeholders everywhere to accelerate climate action.

The Action Platform on Climate Ambition is providing a collaborative space for companies and key stakeholders to tackle both climate mitigation and resilience. This year, the focus will be on driving climate ambition in support to COP26, building on past work under the banners of Pathways to Low-Carbon and Resilient Development and Business Ambition for Climate and Health since its inception in 2017, and a decade of work by Caring for Climate. The UN Compact is uniquely positioned to scale the progress the private sector has made and to translate it into business ambition and country-level action with the support of Global Compact Local Networks and UN partners.

Key Objectives for 2021:
  • In support of the Race to Zero, the Action Platform will drive further uptake of Business Ambition for 1.5°C by supporting companies to take action in their operations and supply chains.
  • Through the Science-Based Targets initiative and in close collaboration with its partners, the Platform aims to close the gap between current contributions to the Paris Agreement and what is needed to achieve net zero emissions and ultimately limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C.
  • Integrating the conversation on the climate-nature-health nexus, the Platform will continue to highlight the health co-benefits of taking climate action and develop a narrative on climate and health resilience.
  • In support of the Race To Resilience, the Action Platform will closely coordinate with partners and related efforts such as the Water Resilience Coalition.
