Pathways to Low-Carbon and Resilient Development

Become a catalyst for enhancing country-level action to meet the ambitions of the Paris Agreement and the SDGs

Why Pathways to Low-Carbon & Resilient Development?

With the Paris Agreement in force, businesses and investors have a critical role to play in climate-proofing our global economy and ensuring a swift transition to a low-carbon, resilient world. Today’s business leadership standards and commitments on climate change — including carbon pricing, science-based targets, sourcing 100 per cent renewable energy, adaptation and responsible policy engagement — can be significantly to become mainstream practice and help bridge the current gap to keep our planet’s warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius. Public commitments by businesses help raise the confidence of Governments to enhance their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by 2020. Now is the time for business leaders to embrace climate action across local markets everywhere and pioneer a pathway forward to a sustainable future for all.

The Global Climate Action Playbook 2018 — developed in partnership with the World Resources Institute, Caring for Climate and participants of the Action Platform — is a practical toolkit for business to help mobilize the significant potential of non-state actors to contribute to low-carbon and resilient development. The Playbook is designed for business and Governments to work together to enhance country-level ambitions and actions to implement the Paris Climate Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Take Action on Climate Change

Pathways to Low-Carbon & Resilient Development aims to mobilize the private sector to become a catalyst for enhancing country-level action to meet the ambitions of the Paris Agreement and the SDGs. The Action Platform provides a collaborative space for companies and key stakeholders to share, learn and identify effective ways to contribute to NDC and SDG implementation. Building on a decade of work by Caring for Climate, the United Nations Global Compact is uniquely positioned to scale the progress made by business to date on global climate action and to translate it into country-level action with the support of Global Compact Local Networks and UN partners. Platform outcomes will also feed into the larger non-state actor agenda of the Paris Agreement and its linkages to the SDGs.

In 2019, the UN Secretary-General will host a Climate Summit inviting all leaders to assess ambition and recalibrate before the implementation of the Paris Agreement in 2020. The 2019 UN Climate Summit aims to forge closer alliances between Governments, business and non-state actors. The Action Platform will support companies to rise to the challenge.
