Pathways to Low-Carbon and Resilient Development

Become a catalyst for enhancing country-level action to meet the ambitions of the Paris Agreement and the SDGs

Why Pathways to Low-Carbon & Resilient Development?

Businesses and investors have a critical role to play in accelerating urgent climate and development action. Today’s business leadership standards and commitments on climate change — including carbon pricing, science-based targets, sourcing 100 per cent renewable energy, adaptation and responsible policy engagement — need to be significantly mainstreamed to help bridge the current gap to keep our planet’s warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Public commitments by businesses help raise the confidence of Governments to enhance their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in line with the Paris Climate Agreement by 2020. Now is the time for business leaders to embrace climate action across local markets everywhere and pioneer a pathway forward to a sustainable future for all.

The Ambition Loop — developed in partnership with the World Resources Institute, We Mean Business, Caring for Climate and participants of the Action Platform, builds on the Global Climate Action Playbook 2018. It showcases specific examples where strong national policy measures built upon business leadership are spurring additional investments and climate action. Further, the Ambition Loop highlights that where government policies are clear and strong, businesses are stepping up to do more and as a result, the pace of change is accelerating. These examples can inform policy-makers’ efforts to achieve their economic development and emissions reduction goals faster.

Take Action on Climate Change

Pathways to Low-Carbon & Resilient Development aims to mobilize the private sector to become a catalyst for enhancing country-level action to meet the ambitions of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Action Platform provides a collaborative space for companies and key stakeholders to share, learn and identify effective ways to contribute to NDC and SDG implementation. Building on a decade of work by Caring for Climate, the UN Global Compact is uniquely positioned to scale the progress made by business to date on global climate action and to translate it into country-level action with the support of Global Compact Local Networks and UN partners. Platform outcomes will also feed into the larger non-state actor agenda of the Paris Agreement and its linkages to the SDGs.

In 2019, the Pathways to Low-Carbon & Resilient Development Action Platform will take a special focus to help prepare UN Global Compact participants provide ambitious and meaningful contributions to the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit taking place during the UN General Assembly Week in September 2019. The Climate Action Summit will mobilize business leaders from all sectors to accelerate ambition and demonstrate concrete progress towards global climate action. It will also challenge all stakeholders to boost national climate and development implementation.

In support of the UN Climate Action Summit, the UN Global Compact is leading on enhancing Business Innovation and Ambition to help ensure meaningful contributions from the private sector to the prioritized action areas of the Summit
