    In this annual Communication on Progress, we describe our actions to continually improve the integration of the Global Compact and its principles into our business strategy, culture and daily operations. Human Rights

  • The AXA Group, just as AXA Mexico, is committed to respecting internationally recognized human rights principles as defined by the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the core standards of the International Labour Organization and the Guiding Principles for the implementation of the United Nations "Protect, Respect and Remedy" Framework ("Ruggie Principles"). Our policy also reflects our commitment to international general and sector-specific standards such as the UN Global Compact, the UN Principles for Responsible Investment and the UN Principles for Sustainable Insurance.

    AXA's Human Rights policy is based on an assessment we used to identify the Human rights impacted by the business activities of insurance companies (i.e. insurance, investment, own operations) and to define priority areas for Human rights due diligence at AXA. The "Responsibility to respect Human rights", as laid down in the Ruggie principles, formed the basis for this assessment. It requires that business enterprises:

    - Avoid causing or contributing to adverse Human rights impacts through their own activities, and address such impacts when they occur;
    - Seek to prevent or mitigate adverse Human rights impacts that are directly linked to their operations, products or services by their business relationships, even if they have not contributed to those impacts.

    The scope of the assessment thus included AXA's Human rights impacts in relation to its employees and insurance customers as well as Human rights impacts caused by AXA's business partners in the areas investment, insurance and procurement. Taking into account AXA's ability to influence compliance with Human rights standards, the analysis focused on business partners with whom AXA has a contractual relationships as well as investments where AXA has a significant level of control.

    The basis for the identification of Human rights was the International Bill of Human rights consisting of the Universal Declaration of Human rights (UDHR); the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR); and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESR).

    The list consisting of over 35 Human rights was analyzed to determine whether an insurance company could have adverse impacts on human rights or whether an insurance company would have the ability to protect or mitigate possible violations of these rights. For each Human right it was determined whether it was relevant for each of the business activities conducted by AXA. The resulting list of “relevant” Human rights was then "clustered" and used as the starting point to analyze which business activities of AXA might impact the relevant Human rights identified.

  • • To support LGBT inclusion at the office, the company has awareness activities for LGBT+ inclusion. The Pride flag was placed in the main building in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Chihuahua and Querétaro to create awareness and as an official statement of AXA Mexico as an ally for LGBT community.

    • AXA Mexico developed an ""LGBT+ allies' guide"" in which recommendations to be an ally, to include, and to respect others, were gathered. One of the most important achievements in terms of I&D was a certification with "Norma Mexicana de Igualdad Laboral y No Discriminación", which means that AXA Mexico has achieved objectives such as non-discriminative processes within HR (recruitment, talent and development management) and a solid process for employees to speak up if they witness or suffer from discrimination, among other important topics.

    • As promotion of freedom of association, social dialogue and employee representation, all employees of the company can choose whether they are represented by a labour union. The local law prohibits the intervention of the company in union matters. All the union representatives participate in company projects.

    • The company has an integral whistleblowing policy, that considers the escalations of allegations to the ones accountable for them, classifies its nature, and provides possible responses for such cases. The Whistleblowing scalation process in Mexico is at a mature stage and responds to the AXA Group´s standards due to:
    o Formal policy addressing according with Group Investigation Standard
    o Communication to employees
    o Existence of escalation channels (Ethic Committee)
    o Investigation Reports for Special & Material cases
    o Main roles & responsibilities in the investigation process have been defined within the 3 lines of defined and business (Compliance, HR, UNE & Internal Audit)

Labour

  • • The company has implemented several disabilities-awareness sessions with experts. Those sessions cover the inclusion of people who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers, may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. The session during the International Day of People with Disabilities had as participants more than 150 AXA employees.

    • In AXA Mexico Gender pay gaps are communicated internally, and the results are reported to the HR Vice Presidency. According to the results, the information can be taken to the Executive Committee always adhering to the rules that govern Diversity and Inclusion. The company also participate in external certifications on the subject.

    • AXA Mexico presents improvements in the Smart Working Scheme, defined as an environment that sustains different forms of flexible work arrangements (teleworking, remote working, part-time work, hot desking, desk sharing, flexible hours, compressed work week) and respects the work-life balance. AXA Mexico has different programs and benefits to keep flexibility, and work-life balance. There is a Home office program active for 6 years. Before the pandemic 47% of AXA employees worked from home 1 day a week or even 2. In addition, there is also a flex time policy. At the beginning of the year, the Smart Working Scheme was modified to provide 2 days of Home Office for all the employees after going back to the office from the pandemic.

    • AXA Mexico provides employee benefits beyond the ones regulated by the law and beyond the AXA group requirements, including retirement benefits, among others in addition to the compensation that is granted in accordance to the law. Such benefits are:
    o Loyalty programs.
    o Life insurance for natural or accidental death, benefits for total or partial disability Additional insurance is also offered for major medical expenses and the option to purchase an excess policy (with dental coverage) at a discounted cost.
    o The purchase of prescription glasses or laser eye surgeries is subsidized, with a maximum amount.
    o Funeral assistance to the employee and direct family members.
    o Parenting policy.
    o The Wellness program of the company is recognized as competitive in the market and counts with the best practices of the Group's benefits team.
    o The company provides support to continue their studies and to get their academic title.
    o In 2020 the Essential or virtual Planmed ® was applied, a benefit for the collaborator and direct family members with unlimited consultations in general medicine, paediatrics and gynaecology, an initial a Check Up.

Environment

  • The science and political ambition show there is a need for strong collective action to fight climate change. Climate change is a medium to long-term risk, with a complex quantification of impacts on our activities. AXA’s strategy is not only to adapt, but also to take advantage of our expertise to provide solutions. Indeed, insurers are well equipped to contribute to the understanding of climate change through their risk management expertise, the vast number of claims data they collect, and the research they can fund to address climate-related risks. They also have a duty to disseminate knowledge about new risks. Through their underwriting decisions, they can also show the risks society is taking and foster prevention actions to mitigate them. Finally, through their significant investments, they are also well positioned to send the right signals to the investment community and to the specific companies they invest in, for example by leveraging the framework developed by the TaskForce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

    AXA’s climate strategy currently includes the following initiatives:

    -Investments: investing in green assets, Impact Investing, divesting from certain carbon-intensive industries (coal and oil sands), climate-related shareholder engagement, climate risk analysis with a long-term view. This work notably explores advanced “portfolio alignment” and “cost of climate” metrics in line with the TCFD framework. This insightful “temperature” approach helps to raise awareness on the need to factor “transition” pathways into climate risk analyses.

    - Insurance: underwriting restrictions on the coal and oil sands industries, “green/sustainable” products in both Property & Casualty and Life & Savings ranges, promotion of new insurance solutions designed for developing countries (typically parametric insurance). As a signatory of the UN Principles for Sustainable Insurance, AXA is committed to “work together with our clients and business partners to raise awareness of environmental, social and governance issues, manage risk and develop solutions.”, as mentioned in the Principle n°2. When relevant, AXA will discuss about Climate or ESG material issues with some of its Corporate clients, and on a more long term and systematic approach, AXA has also initiated this conversation with some of its brokers, either on a one to one format or in the context of the UN Principles for Sustainable Insurance initiatives and forums. .

    - Operations: direct environmental footprint targets covering energy & carbon emissions, water and paper

    More recently, the Group has also decided to start addressing the interrelated issue of biodiversity loss through a comprehensive strategy that will be gradually rolled out.

  • • As part of AXA Group, AXA Mexico participates in the annual report of Environmental Footprint, by reporting and monitoring the energy and resource consumption of the offices and operations. Such report includes the consumption of Water, Energy, the amount of trash generated, the amount of paper used, and the mileage on flights and fleet’s operations. The company evaluates each quarter the values to verify its decrease according to the 2030 and 2050 objectives.

    • The company considers Climate Change a key aspect of its sustainability strategy, by integrating the topic into investment guidelines, environmentally sustainably offers, and research policy output. AXA Mexico works on a comprehensive sustainability strategy, that involves the efforts and initiatives from teams and facilities that in 2020 implemented clean energy in 6 sites, the digitalization of processes across business lines, the strategy from Investment, and a trash challenge during Corporate Responsibility week. Additionally, the Green Champions Community continue rising awareness through activities and communication. ESG factors are actively integrated in investments policy and decisions. Recently, the portfolio’s carbon footprint has been dramatically reduced due to the de-risking actions of Pemex bonds. AXA Mexico also is developing 3 industrial buildings with LEED Certificate. Among other certifications the entity counts with BOMA and SEDEMA.

    • About the environmentally sustainable offers, AXA Mexico intervenes through a comprehensive strategy including several services that contribute to climate change adaptation, resilience, and circular economies. One of the programs focuses on reconstruction and home insurance in Union Hidalgo to reinforce the resilience of the community in case of natural phenomena. Other of the programs provides a resilient community prototype in Escuinapa, Sinaloa. The coastal municipality is highly exposed to hydrometeorological events. Due to the climate change effects, the natural events' frequency and magnitude has increased. In consequence, the larger rainy season causes more floods and damages in the municipality. To strength the resilience of the community, the prototype includes the comprehensive housing reconstruction for vulnerable families, home and life insurance. Also, AXA Mexico provides tele-health to the beneficiaries.

    • As one of the highlight actions, AXA Mexico committed to renew its fleet to hybrid cars around the country. The company has 512 units:499 hybrid cars,2 hybrid SUVs and 13 normal cars, being 99 % of the fleet hybrid. CO2 emission were diminished by 30%, being fuel consumption reduced by a 50 %.

  • • In order to ensure a correct implementation of the Compliance and Ethics code of the company, several control and monitoring mechanisms are used. The company performs the annual certification for the CEO, N-1, and N-2 levels in the organization for the Group Compliance and Ethics Code. Additionally, there are awareness campaigns and mandatory annual training with a final evaluation for all employees. The Group Compliance and Ethics Code is in-force since 2019.

    Here are the KPIs:
    a) 100% of employees in manager positions have signed the annual compliance certification with the AXA Group Compliance & Ethics Code
    b) 99% employees received the compliance awareness program (mandatory)
    c) The contracts with intermediaries and third parties include a provision related to ethics affairs which links to the relevant policies on ethics issues.

    • To avoid bribery and corruption, AXA Mexico provides ABC measures and training for its staff. On an annual basis, a mandatory course about the Integrity Policies & Procedures is provided. There is Zero tolerance for any form of Corruption and this measure is a Tone at the Top. The entity has never been fined/convicted regarding Bribery or Corruption. There is a prohibition of any kind of "facilitation payments". The Policy of Acquisition Costs sets the standard and controls regarding all the payments (money out), which are monitored by Compliance. The entity agreed with CCE (Consejo Coordinador Empresarial) and AFI (Alliance for Integrity) to actively participate in the promotion of the anti-corruption agenda. Furthermore, since 2019, AXA Mexico is member of the UN Global Compact.
