    Dear Mr. Secretary-General,
    I am pleased to communicate our continued support and hereby renew our firm’s (Yakubu and Associates Chamber) commitment to the ten principles of the Global Compact on human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption. With this communication, we express our renewed intent to implement these principles. We remain committed to making the Global Compact and its principles part of the strategy, culture and day-to-day operations of our company, and to engaging in collaborative projects, which advance the broader development goals of the United Nations, particularly the Sustainable Development Goals. Yakubu and Associates Chamber will make a clear statement of this commitment to our stakeholders and the general public.
    We recognize that a key requirement for participation in the Global Compact is the annual submission of a Communication on Progress (COP) that describes our company’s efforts to implement the ten principles. We support public accountability and transparency, and hereby report on progress in the last year. Our report includes:
    • A description of practical actions (i.e., disclosure of any relevant policies, procedures, activities) that the company has taken (or plans to undertake) to implement the Global Compact principles in each of the four issue areas (human rights, labor, environment, anti-corruption).
    • A measurement of outcomes (i.e., the degree to which targets/performance indicators were met, or other qualitative or quantitative measurements of results).

Human Rights
  • Assessment, policy and goals
  • Description of the relevance of human rights for the company (i.e. human rights risk-assessment). Description of policies, public commitments and company goals on Human Rights.

  • Yakubu and Associates Chamber supports and respects human rights. Our firm is not complicit in any human rights abuses. Over the past year, we have supported efforts by Tanganyika Law Society to address human rights issues in Tanzania.
    The firm successfully met the objective of supporting and protecting human rights. No human rights abuses were reported at the office.
    The firm has policies to protect human rights and has strong policies against discrimination.

  • Implementation
  • Description of concrete actions to implement Human Rights policies, address Human Rights risks and respond to Human Rights violations.

  • We routinely discuss human rights issues in our management meetings. Human rights risks are quickly identified and addressed through these management meetings.

  • Human rights issues are monitored through the management meetings and the human resource office.

Labour
  • Assessment, policy and goals
  • Description of the relevance of labour rights for the company (i.e. labour rights-related risks and opportunities). Description of written policies, public commitments and company goals on labour rights.

  • Yakubu and Associates Chamber supports freedom of association and recognises collective bargaining. The firm recognises all the rights of employees. As such, forced and compulsory labour and discrimination in all forms are prohibited. We strongly oppose child labour and support its abolition. Our firm is a member of the Association of Tanzania Employers and our office premises are registered with the Occupational Safety and Health Authority.
    The firm successfully met this objective. The firm was voted runner-up best small employer of the year at the 2016 Employer of the Year Awards.
    The firm has all relevant employment policies and all employees have copies of the policies in the employment manual.

  • Implementation

  • We are audited by the Association of Tanzania Employers every year. This audit is rigorous and involved interviews with employees and management to evaluate implementation of labour policies.

Environment

  • Yakubu and Associates Chamber supports the precautionary approach to environmental challenges. The firm supports all initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility. The firm encourages the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies. Throughout the year, we have supported projects and clients who have adopted environmentally friendly technology.
    We believe that the firm met this objective. We shall continue supporting local initiatives to promote environmental responsibility.

  • We implement our environmental policies through discussions in the management meetings and routinely receive feedback on implementation of these policies from the office supervisor.

Anti-Corruption

  • Our firm is alive to the need to address corruption. To this end, we have throughout the year ensured that all employees adhere to our anti-corruption and anti-bribery policy.
    We have met this objective and have had no cases of corruption or bribery during the year.

  • Implementation
  • Description of concrete actions to implement anti-corruption policies, address anti-corruption risks and respond to incidents.

  • We have a robust anti-corruption and anti-bribery policy. This policy is prominently displayed in various areas in our office. We also sign anti-bribery pledges for all projects. Acts of corruption and bribery are investigated by a committee and if such allegations are proven, the employee is terminated.

  • Measurement of outcomes

  • We have constant engagement with all our clients, suppliers and stakeholders. Through this engagement we are able to monitor conduct of employees and evaluate anti-corruption performance.
