To achieve this goal, the project strives to build the competence of the small holders within agriculture cooperatives to comply with GLOBALG.A.P. and FAIRTRADE standards, thus assisting them to access new, high-value, local and international fresh produce markets. Adherence to good agriculture practices (GAP) of GLOBALG.A.P. will ensure sustainable use of land and water resources and mitigate food safety risks for cooperative small holders. Alignment with FAIRTRADE standards allows the small holder to more fairly compete in international trade, provides a safety net when international prices fall below a sustainable level, and brings money back into the cooperatives communities. Pesticide contamination to the land and within communities has been reduced through aligning to GAP and requiring cooperative members to properly dispose of empty pesticide containers.
