On 19 December 2000, a number of governments co-sponsored a Draft Resolution stressing that efforts made to meet the challenges of globalization could benefit from enhanced cooperation between the United Nations and all relevant partners – in particular, with the private sector.
This Draft Resolution took into account the ideas expressed in the Secretary-General's Millennium Report with regard to enhanced cooperation with the private sector. It also stressed the need for Member States to further discuss partnerships with the private sector and consider ways and means to enhance cooperation between the United Nations and all relevant partners.
In order to ensure that globalization becomes a positive force for all in the twenty-first century, the Draft Resolution decided to include the item entitled "Towards global partnerships" in the agenda of its fifty-sixth session.
