UN Assistant-Secretary General Michael Doyle recently introduced the Global Compact to more than 200 representatives of Spanish companies, business associations, labour and civil society groups, and government agencies. The conference was held in La Coruna, at the headquarters of apparel manufacturer Inditex, on 31 October.
Mr. Doyle discussed the origin of the Global Compact, its nine founding principles, and current efforts to leverage the expertise of different UN agencies to stimulate partnership projects, policy dialogue, country outreach, and institutional learning.
Among the leading Spanish companies participating in the conference were BBVA, El Corte Ingles, Lladro, Freixenet, and Telefonica. Officials from the government's Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Foreign Affairs also attended, along with senior staff from Instituto Cervantes, the Fundacion del Pino, and the NGO Cultura pro Naciones Unidas.
