(Sofia, 9 April 2014) – Hosted by Global Compact Network Bulgaria, Local Networks from South East Europe convened over three days in Sofia, Bulgaria. The meeting was attended by Local Network representatives from Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Poland, Macedonia and the emerging network in Romania.
The focus of the first day was on the role of business in the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Post-2015 Business Engagement Architecture – a framework launched in September 2013 to help business enhance corporate sustainability as an effective contribution to sustainable development. The meeting was attended by nearly 100 business participants who shared their challenges, vision and best practices, as well as explored opportunities for future collaboration on common issues. Attention was also given to European policies recently put into place regarding corporate responsibility.
The second day focused on environmental and energy issues, particularly as they pertain to the oil and gas industry in the region. Speakers and attendees included local policy experts, UNDP and the Ministry of Economy and Energy of Bulgaria. Discussions centred on policy, best practices, as well as COP19 and the role of business through Caring for Climate (C4C). Networks from Turkey and Poland also shared their best practices on these issues with business representatives and others in attendance.
Collaboration between networks was the key theme of the final day of the event, during which attendees discussed practical ideas on how to enhance and further build the Global Compact brand in the region.
