The potential for economic growth and inclusion in Africa is at an all time high – with private sector investments and operations providing the backbone for long- term growth, prosperity and opportunity. But investment and business activity must be sustainable – bringing value not just financially, but also in social, environmental and ethical terms. The Global Compact is placing an emphasis on scaling responsible business and partnerships for sustainable development throughout the continent. The following outlines key activities and events.
To respond to changing global economic trends and to better connect with the growing private sector in Africa, the Global Compact has placed a special focus on a long-term strategy for growth and engagement in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Released in June 2014, Partners in Change: UN Global Compact Advancing Corporate Sustainability in Africa (the Africa Strategy) will serve as the overarching plan of action to emphasize the Global Compact's value proposition in the region. The African Sustainable CEO Business Roundtable Forum in Lagos, Nigeria, took place on 19 January 2015 as a high-level business event that marked the finale of the Siemens collective action project in Nigeria. Co-hosted by the UN Global Compact, Local Network Nigeria and Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) and supported by the Siemens Integrity Initiative, the event brought together 150 businesses, civil society, Government and media to share their views on how the private should get involved in Africa’s development goals with a focus on private sector efforts on corruption and collective action.
The Africa Barometer developed jointly by the Global Compact and the Financial Times - This is Africa, is based on a comprehensive, region-wide assessment of sustainable business practice – covering international companies with operations in the region, as well as local and regional companies.
