Home / Progress & Disclosure / Overview
Business participants in the UN Global Compact make a commitment to make the Global Compact’s ten principles part of their business strategies and their day-to-day operations. At the same time, companies are required to issue an annual Communication on Progress (COP), a public disclosure to stakeholders (e.g., investors, consumers, civil society, governments, etc.) on progress made in implementing the ten principles of the UN Global Compact, and in supporting broad UN development goals.
This section is designed to assist companies of all sizes and sectors in the implementation of the Global Compact principles and to outline different options of communicating progress.
Making Progress introduces resources designed to help companies continuously improve their performance in implementing the Global Compact principles. These resources include the Global Compact Self-Assessment tool, the Global Compact Management Model, the Blueprint for Corporate Sustainability Leadership and implementation guides specific to each Global Compact issue area (Human Rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption).
Communicating Progress introduces practical tools – including the basic COP template and the GRI reporting guidelines – to assist companies in communicating their progress at different levels of sophistication. It also describes the purpose of communicating progress and the Global Compact’s rules and integrity measures around disclosure and transparency.
The Global Compact Differentiation Programme provides a value platform for companies at all levels of sustainability performance and transparency and gives companies recognition for progress made in the context of their size, industry and geography.
The COP policy was developed to provide a platform to analyze progress through transparency and disclosure, allowing stakeholders to ensure that companies meet their commitment to the Global Compact principles. The goal is to provide various stakeholders – from investors to civil society and the media – with material information to make informed choices about the companies they interact with.
