Case Description

Within the framework of WWF?s ?Conservation Partner? Programme, Lafarge, the world leader in building materials, and WWF, the conservation organisation, are implementing a world-wide partnership aimed at:

-Improving Lafarge?s environmental performance

-Strengthening Lafarge?s environmental policy and practices

-Supporting WWF?s forest restoration,

-Contributing to the mitigation of climate change

-Reinforcing Lafarge?s sustainable development strategy

Lafarge and WWF are working together to raise the bar for industry and building material sector. The areas of common work:

- Climate change

- Biodiversity, quarry rehabilitation and forest landscape restoration

- Local partnerships

- Environmental performance indicators

- Sustainable housing

- Control of Toxics

Lafarge is developing transparency and stakeholder outreach in the pursuit of its activities. The agreement with WWF also constitutes a tool for progress which will encourage greater involvement by all Lafarge?s employees and strengthen the environmental management of the Group?s industrial facilities. These actions are consistent with the Global Compact principles and contribute to their implementation.2.1 Partnership?s Milestones

March 2000: Signature of the partnership agreement

November 2001:

-C02 reduction target announcement (-20% per ton of cement produced globally over the period

1990-2010 :

-10% for the industrialized countries (according to WWF?s accounting method)

2001-2002: Development of local partnerships : Kenya, China, Austria

December 2002: Successful partnership mid-term review which confirmed the relationship for two new years

May 2003: Lafarge?s 2nd Sustainability Report

-2002: first environmental audit by independant consultant

-Performances end 2002 (from 1990): specific emission reduction (per ton of cement) - 10,8% ; absolute emission reduction in Annex I: - 9,5%

-91% of Lafarge?s sites with an environmental audit since 2000

-87% of Lafarge?s quarry with a rehabilitation plan

-Use of recycled raw material: Cement division 10,5% ; Gypsum division 49%

-Production waste going to disposal: Cement division 1,4% ; Gypsum division 1%

Quarry Rehabilitation

Lafarge has over many decades developed and applied the techniques to ensure that quarry sites are carefully selected, designed and restored, in many cases creating habitats which support rare species. Lafarge?s work in quarry restoration would not have been possible without the dedication of Lafarge employees in partnership with wildlife trusts, conservation organizations such as the WWF and local community groups.

Local Partnerships initiatives

Within the global partnership, Lafarge and WWF are committed to developing local partnerships in key countries where both Lafarge and WWF are operating.

The objective of these local partnerships is to improve the management and conservation of biodiversity and natural resources at local level, in order to meet the needs of people and support sustainable development.

Three partnerships are already under implementation respectively in China, Austria and Kenya. Lafarge and WWF intend to develop other local partnerships (France, Morocco).
