(New York, 16 December 2008) – Today, the second meeting of the Global Compact Labour Working Group took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The meeting convened participants from business, civil society, employee organizations as well as representatives from the Global Compact Office and International Labour Organisation (ILO). Also participating via teleconference were Global Compact Local Networks from Argentina, Morocco and Pakistan.
"I am pleased to see a broad range of constituents step up their engagement on the Labour Principles," said Georg Kell, Executive Director of the Global Compact.
Participants explored the role of the working group to address the four Global Compact Labour Principles. Practical experiences in addressing the labour principles were shared by representatives from Cadbury, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and Specialized Technology Resources - Responsible Sourcing Division. In addition, participants from Local Networks presented their efforts to advance the labour principles within a national context. Finally, an overview of the ILO's Decent Work Agenda was discussed in relation to broader issues in labour and human rights.
The meeting concluded with the launch of the first publication of the Labour Working Group, The Labour Principles of the United Nations Global Compact: A Guide for Business. The publication will also be available in Spanish and French.
The next meeting of the Labour Working Group will convene on 8 June, 2009 in conjunction with the Annual Local Networks Forum in Istanbul, Turkey. Inquiries regarding participation in the Labour Working Group meeting may be directed to Venu Keesari at keesari @ unglobalcompact.org.
