(New York, 2 July 2008) – On the occasion of the 11th African Union Summit, held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, on 24-28 June 2008, the Executive Council of the African Union issued a decision on the critical role of the private sector in the promotion of Africa’s regional and continental integration agenda.
The decision follows the first African Private Sector Forum jointly organized by the African Union Commission and the UN Global Compact Office on 22-23 January 2008 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The decision highlights the ongoing collaboration between the AU Commission and the Global Compact Office, and calls for "effective mechanisms to follow up on the implementation of the agreed recommendations".
