(Geneva, 30 May 2008) – Today the inaugural meeting of the Global Compact Labour Working
Group took place at the International Labour Organization (ILO) Headquarters in Geneva. Organized
under the auspices of the Global Compact Board, the working group is co-chaired by Antonio
Peñalosa, Secretary-General of the International Organization of Employers (IOE), and Guy Ryder,
General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
The meeting convened ILO experts on the four labour principles, as well as
representatives of employers’ organizations and trade unions. The group discussed the ILO's ongoing
work to promote the fundamental principles and rights at work and existing guidance materials used
by companies to implement the labour principles. In addition to identifying priorities for the
working group, attendees considered labour issues in global production systems.
