(Barcelona, 29 September 2006) - On 28-29 September, the Barcelona
Center for the Support of Global Compact Universal Forum of Cultures Foundation
(Barcelona Center) hosted the first Global Compact Progress and Implementation
Workshop immediately following the Global Compact Local Networks Forum.
Attended by 22 participants from 15 countries, this workshop
brought Global Compact Network focal points together with representatives from
business, corporate citizenship organizations and UN agencies. The workshop was
designed to provide the tools, knowledge and inspiration necessary for Local
Network focal points to be effective mentors to other members of their networks.
Training focused on enabling focal points to assist in participants efforts to
internalize the ten principles, make an active contribution to UN development
goals and prepare communications on progress (COPs).
Private sector
representatives from Novartis, Danfoss and Telefónica shared their companies
comprehensive approaches and experiences implementing Global Compact principles
and communicating on progress. In addition, workshop coordinator Claude
Fussler offered a framework for analysis based on the Global Compact performance
model and Global Compact COP Manager Jeff Senne provided a detailed look at
reporting on progress.
The workshop explored tough questions
related to company motivations for enacting their commitment to the Global
Compact; tensions between market forces, public policy and company values;
stakeholder relations; and obstacles faced by SMEs.
The Barcelona
Center will carry-out an evaluation of the workshops impact in the
field.
