(New York, 23 June 2006) - The UN Global Compact Office commends Alcan and AREVA, both Global Compact participants, for their leadership in joining the Business Leaders Initiative on Human Rights (BLIHR). BLIHR is aimed at finding and promoting practical approaches to apply the aspirations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the private sector. Alcan is a leading global materials company, headquartered in Montreal, Canada. AREVA is an energy multinational specializing in nuclear power generation and electricity transmission and distribution, headquartered in Paris, France.
Alcan and AREVA join nine other companies already engaged in BLIHR. Eight of the eleven current BLIHR members are Global Compact participants. The eleven members are:
