(Brussels, 15 June 2006) - A Global Compact local network was
launched today in Belgium. The launch event, convened by InBev and Edelman Brussels,
drew representatives from a large variety of industry sectors. Among the fifty attendees
were twenty-five local and foreign companies, several civil society organizations
including Amnesty International, business associations, the Belgian Government
and the European Commission.
Michel Lastschenko of the Belgian Development
Cooperation stressed the importance of public-private partnerships stating
that ''the private sector can and must play a more dynamic role in the
world, specifically in countries still affected by extreme poverty and the other
plagues that it causes".
Another meeting will follow with network
participants to discuss the organization of the local chapter, as well as its
engagement with other Global Compact networks in the region.
