On 28 October, around fifty representatives from business and civil society
gathered in Singapore for a Global Compact Workshop. The objective of the
meeting was to inform and to listen to stakeholders, and to facilitate the
establishment of a Global Compact Network Singapore in early 2005.
In his opening speech, HE Mr. Zainul Abidin Rasheed, Minister of
State for Foreign Affairs, underlined the strong interest of the Singaporean
Government and Business Community, to actively engage with the Global Compact.
Anton Stadler of the Global Compact Office delivered the keynote
speech, informing participants about the current state of Global Compact
Networks worldwide and emphasizing the special relevance of such a network for
Singapore. Dr. Richard Leete, the Regional UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP
Representative based in Kuala Lumpur, took part in a panel discussion addressing
questions and comments made by workshop participants.
Discussions
were held with the National Tripartite Initiative on CSR (Singapore National
Employers Federation SNEF, Singapore National Trade Union Congeress SNTUC, and
Ministry of Labour) created in May this year. The Tripartite Initiative will
reach out to the organizers of this workshop, to the Centre for Corporate Social
Responsibility (CCSR), to civil society and to several Singaporean universities,
to establish a Global Compact Network Singapore.
