On 22 October 2004, more than 80 experts from business, civil society,
labour, academia and international organizations gathered at the United Nations
in Geneva to discuss the topic of business and human rights.
The meeting was organized by the Office of the High Commissioner
for Human Rights, in cooperation with the Global Compact Office. It formed part
of consultations requested by the Human Rights Commission in connection with the
task of preparing a report on “The responsibilities of transnational
corporations and related business enterprises with regard to human rights." The
High Commissioner will submit this report to the next session of the Commission
on Human Rights in March/April 2005.
Among other issues,
participants discussed the scope and status of existing initiatives and
standards relating to business and human rights. The meeting further sought to
identify knowledge gaps and to clarify what business needs to improve
performance in this area.
