GTZ, World's Largest Development Agency, Joins Global Compact

2004-04-22

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) has become the second national development agency (after the Agence Française de Développement) to join the Global Compact. With approximately 10,000 employees working in more than 2,700 projects in 130 countries, GTZ is the world’s largest international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Managing Director Dr. Bernd Eisenblätter expressed GTZ’s support for the Global Compact’s principles and pledged to make them part of the strategy, culture and day-to-day operations of his organization.

“The Global Compact is a very promising initiative, as it represents the visibly improved partnership between the private sector, academia, politics and civil society,” Eisenblätter said.

Georg Kell, Executive Head of the Global Compact, said he welcomed the participation of GTZ: “We strongly encourage development agencies to join the initiative. As an employer as well as an implementer of development programs, they forge an important link between the internalization of the principles and the broader development context of good corporate citizenship.”
