African Employers' Organizations Support Global Compact

2003-05-20

Executives of 12 African employers' organizations, all members of both the International Organization of Employers (IOE) and the Panafrican Employers' Confederation (PEC), met in Nairobi/Kenya on 14 and 15 May to discuss how their organizations could contribute to a better understanding and broader support for the Compact in Africa. They unanimously agreed that by supporting the Global Compact they could not only help integrate African enterprisess in the global economy but could also make it a vehicle for initiatives such as NEPAD to strengthen the capacity of African countries to develop effective mechanisms for social dialogue and create a legal and regulatory environment respectful of the Compact's principles. They further agreed that by playing an active role in national Global Compact networks, employers' organizations would be able to engage more effectively with other civil society actors.
