Peace through Commerce

Organized by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the Global Compact and the University of Notre Dame.

At the founding of the UN in 1945, political and business leaders, as well as scholars, shared the conviction that commerce could play an important role in fostering peace. Half a century later, with the emergence of an interlocking global economy and the enormous new reach of business, the business community faces new challenges in its engagement with societies with a high risk of conflict. A number of companies operating in conflict zones of the world will present their experience, especially the lessons which might be replicated as “best practices”. Also scholars and public policy makers will discuss the conceptual issues and learning from around the globe.

Is Corporate Citizenship Making a Difference?

The symposium is being convened by UNISA Africa Centre for Corporate Citizenship, the Global Compact and the Lindenberg Center for Global Citizenship, and will take place at the Ghana Institute for Management and Public Administration.

“Is corporate citizenship making a difference?” This question will become increasingly prominent, as both protagonists and critics of corporate citizenship seek to understand, monitor, and enhance the contribution of business to sustainable development. It requires that we develop measures of success that are commonly agreed upon, that respond to the challenges of a transition to sustainability, and that relate to the broader impacts of business activity and not just discrete “best practice” examples. Papers discussed at the symposium will be considered for a special edition of the Journal of Corporate Citizenship, to be published in Winter 2007.

A number of symposium bursaries will be available. Registration will open on the 5 June 2006. For further details and registration, please visit the website: http://www.unisa.ac.za/ccc .
