Home / Local Networks / Overview
Although there were few signatories at the time, the Global Compact Network Türkiye was formally launched in October 2002 by UNDP and the Turkish Confederation of Employers Association (TISK). The Local Network is Turkey's largest and most inclusive sustainability platform.
The Local Network’s governance structure consists of a multi-stakeholder Board (academia, business, civil society and labour), which provides ongoing strategic and policy guidance on advancing the ten principles in consultation with key observers (NGOs, cities, public organizations and the United Nations).
Board Members are selected from a pool of Turkish Global Compact participants who have demonstrated leadership in corporate sustainability and advocacy on behalf of the Global Compact nationally and internationally. All business Board Members have reported on progress for a minimum of 5 operational years, preferably reporting at least twice according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Non-business Board Members have reported on progress at least twice prior to appointment. The Local Network has unanimously agreed that all Board Members should support the network by making a voluntary contribution based on number of employees.
Following its first General Assembly meeting held in early 2013, the Local Network appointed 16 Members and 2 Auditors (with 2 standby)*:
In 2009, the Turkiye Network developed the Sectoral Deployment, which was highlighted as a best practice in 2010. This approach is now being implemented in the automotive, pharmaceutical, tourism and banking sectors.
