The Gulf Region (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates)
Since
2006, the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) has been engaged as a focal point in extending the
influence and membership base of the Global Compact in the Arabian Gulf Region. Its primary goal
has been to promote the Global Compact in the region through seminars, workshops, roundtable
discussions, lectures, presentations, publications, company-counseling, and so on, whereas at the
same time to coordinate the continuing participation of registered companies in the Global Compact.
Last year, specifically, EEG rallied a strong representation of GC members from the Arabian Gulf in
the Leaders Summit in Geneva, July 2007. EEG also organized the region’s
first
COP workshop in September 2007.
After this systematic and persistent effort, EEG officially launched the Global Compact
Network for the GCC States, during a historical ceremony, which took place on 7th April 2007, in
Dubai. The Network was established with the following main goals:
- To advance the Global Compact and its Principles in the GCC
- To raise local CSR practice to international benchmarks
- To rally the support and participation of the members of the GCC Local Network
- To create opportunities for multi-stakeholder dialogue, learning and collective actions
