Frequently Asked Questions On the Consultation Process

Will the views from companies on the addition of a principle against corruption be treated confidentially?

With the letter that has been sent out we are asking the views of the CEOs who have committed their support to the original nine principles. These views of course will be treated as confidential. These responses will be used for our internal consultation process only, in order for us to determine if there is consensus one way or the other regarding the addition of a principle against corruption.

What constitutes "broad-based support"?

The inclusive and transparent consultation process is aimed at working towards consensus among the participants. This approach is intrinsic to the United Nations. Therefore, we will collect all views, and seek a maximum of commonalities. The Secretary-General has clearly said that he would not want to move ahead on this if the great majority of the participants oppose it. We hope that following the deadline for the consultation process (21 April 2004), we will be able to define better what broad-based support means.

Will there be the addition of another principle on various areas the Global Compact does not cover with its existing principles?

The Secretary-General is prepared to give public assurance that this addition would be exceptional in its nature.
