Supply Chain Management

12-13 June 2003, New York

On 12-13 June, more than 200 representatives from business, civil society, academia and UN agencies gathered at UN Headquarters to identify problems and solution related to supply chain management and partnerships.

Cross border supply chain management is one of the key issues facing global businesses and their suppliers today. The Dialogue explored the challenges faced in this area with the goal to improve workplace conditions and standards of workers and to further advance the principles of the Global Compact. Among the questions addressed were: How do the GC principles translate into corporate practice throughout the supply chain? How can the Global Compact principles best be implemented? What is the perspective of suppliers and what are the local drivers that provide incentives and disincentives for suppliers to improve their standards? Where does company responsibility end and what is the role of national governments? Participants discussed a number of the key challenges companies face in this area with a view to contribute to the development of practical solutions.

Led by the United Nations Development Programme, the Partnership Dialogue provided a platform for the exchange of experiences, identify good practices, and to advance a better understanding of how to practically implement partnership projects involving the UN system and the private sector. It helped to galvanize action by companies participating in the Global Compact and to demonstrate the concerted actions these companies are taking to contribute to sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals.
