(Copenhagen, 17 May 2011) – The UN Global Compact and UN Environment Programme’s Caring for Climate initiative convened its third signatories meeting – an event that took place in the context of "Global Compact Week" in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The meeting drew more than 100 senior representatives from business, civil society, Government, the UN and other interests. Focused on business contributions to global sustainability ahead of Rio+20, participants discussed ways to advance the initiative’s current workstreams – climate and development and low carbon leaders – as well as collective ways to address the climate-water-energy nexus.
During a special session on Rio+20, Mr. Brice Lalonde, Executive Coordinator of Rio+20, appealed to the initiative’s signatories to urge local and national governments to support solutions and ongoing efforts by business and to strengthen these efforts through coalition building.
The event featured joint sessions with the UN Global Compact's CEO Water Mandate to explore potential synergies between the two platforms and the energy-water nexus as well as with Global Compact LEAD companies about the role of business in providing access to sustainable energy for all.
